General Updates: We are now covered by insurance through NPNS Inc - things to know about coverage are:
Directors and Officers insurance coverage is retroactive from November 1, 2022. The new insurance policy took more time than usual to renew. It actually needed to be rewritten. We have a new carrier and broker.
EPN is the contractor who is managing that insurance. I will continue to be the link between EPN and your organization.
There has been an increase in costs, the new nonprofit D and O policy is considerably more expensive than the prior one with JD Fulwiler/Philadelphia Indemnity. EPN is expecting this will be the same for the General Liability coverage.
EPN will be the same contractor creating the new GL policy.
There should not be any changes in the 2023-24 year, but I can’t promise anything after that.
If you anticipate an event that hadn’t been forecasted, then you may have to purchase your own policy rider.
Update on Good Neighbor Agreement:
ALNA Board Members (Ashley and Ginger) are continuing to work with the County, and Do Good Multnomah on a good neighbor agreement. There is discussion of deciding whether to sign it now, or wait until closer to when shelter is back online. We want to work with neighbors to see what they would like to see, and what timeline seems appropriate.

The focus of this event will be finalizing the site selection criteria that will narrow our NPAC candidate sites from 5 sites (currently) to 3 sites. Our design team will then begin preparing schematic design renderings for each of the 3 final candidate sites. These renderings will be shared at Community Workshop #3 in April.

North Portland Aquatic Center News: Pier Park has been removed from consideration as a candidate site for the future North Portland Aquatic Center (NPAC) Pier Park has been removed from consideration as a candidate site for the NPAC. Pier Park has received two Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grants (LWCF #41-00423 and LWCF #41-01560). With any LWCF grant, if any part of the property is altered to a use other than public outdoor recreation, a conversion will be triggered and the only way to resolve a conversion is by acquiring replacement property of equal or greater fair market value, and equal or greater recreational utility directly adjacent to the existing park boundary. As we are targeting a footprint of development of potentially 2 to 3 acres in size, our options for acquisition of 2 to 3 acres of land adjacent to Pier Park and conversion to open space for park use are extremely limited if not impossible. This would have presented a schedule delay to acquire land, additional costs for land acquisition, and additionally, a schedule delay and additional costs to coordinate with the federal government on a conversion process to unhinge LWCF grant requirements on a Pier Park development area. For these reasons, Pier Park was removed from consideration as a candidate site.
This takes the candidate site list from 6 sites to 5 sites. The 5 remaining candidate sites are Columbia Park, Columbia Park Annex, Northgate Park, St. Johns Park (adjacent to St. Johns Community Center), and University Park (adjacent to Charles Jordan Community Center).

Rumble on the River #4 - Community Forum on The Critical Energy Infrastructure Hub & Zenith Energy | January 17th 6pm
Rumble on the River #4 A coalition of 22 neighborhood, river and climate advocacy organizations sponsor this series of free forums to increase public awareness of the safety, health and seismic risks associated with the Critical Energy Infrastructure (CEI) Hub and Zenith Energy. Each forum is different in its approach to examining the 6-mile stretch of aging tank farms that line the North Reach of the Willamette River within a seismic liquefaction zone. In addition to the existing and potential harms of the CEI Hub, the panelists will also discuss the City’s recent and unexpected approval of the Land Use Compatibility Statement for Zenith Energy, which lies within the Hub. The CEI Hub is a six-mile stretch of aging tank farms located in NW Portland along the Willamette River. Within the hub is Zenith, bringing dangerous oil trains through our communities. The forum on January 17th will be information packed and features information on the dangers the CEI Hub poses to us because of seismic risks. FREE Douglas-fir and Ponderosa pine trees available
Last week, Completely Arbortrary, a local podcast dedicated to all things trees, and Treecology, Inc., a local tree care service company, sponsored a “treevia” (get it?) night at Arbor Beer Lodge. After the friendly competition, your Arbor Lodge Tree Team was gifted 20 Douglas-fir and 7 Ponderosa pine trees. Typically selling for around $10 each, we are now giving them away on a first-come, first-served basis. Free! The trees are in one-gallon containers and look great: young and green and sprite. If you’ve cut a tree for your Christmas celebration, planting one of these beauties could be a lovely cosmic balance to your holiday. Both are native species and visually appealing. As mature trees, they will provide cooling shade, wildlife habitat, erosion control, and other benefits, while enhancing your home’s value, and helping the planet deal with a warming climate. Planting a tree would also be a wonderful legacy for you or your family or make a thoughtful gift to a friend or loved one. 2022 Bill Naito Community Trees Award | The individual winner is Ginger Edwards
The Bill Naito Community Trees Award recognizes our neighbors who have worked tirelessly to care for, protect, and advocate for our community’s trees.
This year, the individual winner is Ginger Edwards. From the Arbor Lodge Tree Teams nomination: “Ginger Edwards is our community’s Lorax. Not only does she speak for trees, she speaks for parks and native species and pollinators and as a former police officer and social worker, the entire human-human and human-Other community that enfolds us all. The Arbor Lodge Tree Team works to plant, preserve, and promote trees in our neighborhood and beyond. Mainly, though, we are just people who like trees. Ginger has guided, motivated, and ever-so-gently cajoled us into a group of volunteer “tree geeks” - increasingly cohesive, educated, and focused on the two branches of our tree mission: policy/advocacy/education and putting trees in the ground.
“The Lorax” story encourages personal care and involvement in making a situation better. Seuss writes: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Ginger is our Lorax.””
