Update: November 30th 2021

ALNA is seeking gift cards, or donations to purchase them for food insecure children at Chief Joseph Elementary School - our local community school.

Each year near the Winter Holiday Break, the Parent Teacher Organization, and the Backpack Program gather extra food and cash to help those identified children who are food insecure.  This year, that is 50 children.

The 3 week Winter Holiday break is a hungry time for those kids.  They would normally get both breakfast and lunch at school.  So, we try to help out by donating food, and money for gift cards to enable them to buy the food they need to get by.

You can help, just go to:

www.chiefjosephschool.org

At the top right of the page is a donate button which goes to paypal, and donors can select "backpack program" from the drop down menu

or,

if you would prefer to write a check, you can take it to the school before December 15th, and drop it through the mail slot.  Be sure to note it is for the Backpack Program.

If I receive any more information about donating food supplies, I'll share it immediately.

Last year, you all contributed $3,000 to this cause.  I was floored when I heard that amount, just amazing!  Let's try to do the same or maybe a little better this year.

Thanks for caring for our neighborhood children.

Update: November 25th 2021

Many, many thanks to all the neighbors who are cooking, buying, bringing food to the Arbor Lodge Shelter today at 12:30.   A true community Thanksgiving.

We put the word out and so many of you responded, it is so heart warming.

The shelter is open, about 45 people are now warm and dry, have clean restrooms and showers ( those trucks in the parking lot).  But, they don't have a kitchen.  They do have 3 refrigerators, 2 or 3 crockpots, a microwave, and a hot pot to heat water.  The kitchen will come with the remodel next summer/fall.  One step at a time.

So, look for postings in the future about how you can help with food, socks, towels, etc.

Happy Thanksgiving to all neighbors, and thank you so much.

Boys & Girls Aid | Seeking Foster Parents

Spreading the word:

You Can Help Oregon’s Foster Care Crisis

On any given day, there are 7,000 children in Oregon’s foster care system. Many of these children come from situations of abuse and neglect only to find themselves facing uncertainty and instability once they enter foster care.

Boys & Girls Aid, a nonprofit founded in Portland in 1885, wants to change that. We are looking for compassionate people to help improve the lives of children in foster care.

A good foster home is often the first place a child in foster care has felt safe in a long time. Foster parents help children build trust in adults and provide a supportive environment where they can thrive.

Boys & Girls Aid supports foster parents with responsive program staff available 24/7, ongoing free professional training, and generous monthly, tax-free stipends ranging from $1,200 to $3,500 per month. There are options to fit every family, from full-time placement to relief care a few days a month.

Fostering children might bring life changes and challenges, but it’s a great opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life — and in your own life, too. “It’s worth it to get to know these kids,” said experienced foster parents Jen and Chad. “It’s enriched our lives a lot.”

To learn more, visit our website: boysandgirlsaid.org/fostercare, or contact Outreach Coordinator Scott Appel at (503) 542-2316 or sappel@boysandgirlsaid.org.
